KATIE’S KORNER:  Katie Riley, President

What is the Why?

The “why” is very simple. Washington County Kids (WCK) exists because too many kids lack access to afterschool and summer programs. Participation in a broad range of activities is crucial for children as it leads to greater academic success and better career outcomes.

Many families struggle to provide enrichment opportunities most often because of prohibitive costs and lack of transportation. We also know that for most families, economic survival requires all adults to work. However, children need supportive supervision and guidance, especially through adolescence to make positive choices. Without appropriate programs, afterschool and summer times are missed opportunities to develop positive interests and values.

Our community must invest in itself by investing in our children.

Washington County Kids is focused on building a partnership between parents, providers, and the community. This will increase access to quality programs to obtain benefits for children and families. Broadening access is dependent on sustainable funding. We cannot pursue this goal without your input and help.

The “who” is you. Please join us at our annual Reach for the Stars event on June 6th. We have planned a wonderful evening where you will join company with people who agree on the WCK “why” – to increase access to afterschool and summer programs for all kids.

Thank you,

Board President & Founder

MISSION FORWARD:  Needs Analysis Proposal to the Washington County Board of Commissioners

Dear Friend of Washington County Kids,

Will you help us urge the Washington County Board of Commissioners to approve a Needs Analysis for Afterschool & Summer Care?

No one, including county officials, knows the full extent of the need for additional programs and funding for out of school (OST) programs.

This study would:

  • Determine the needs of those NOT being served by comparing survey results with existing population data.
  • Discover existing and needed resources by program, age, ethnicity, gender, and geography.
  • Provide information needed to increase funding for programs, especially after the recent passage of landmark bill, HB 4082.

Here are all the ways you can help:

1)  Join us at Board of Commissioner meetings:  May 28 & June 25 | 6:30pm

2)  Testify to the Board of Commissioners

IN PERSON   Arrive by 6:15 to sign-up.

IN ZOOM        Sign-up as soon as possible for the limited spots.

IN WRITING   Email letter by 2pm on the Monday before each meeting.

3) Add your name to our supporter letter using the comment feature or by email.

Thank you!

PARENTS:  We need your afterschool input!

Our first-ever survey of afterschool parents is live!

We need the help of all parents in Washington County to gather data about afterschool participation.  The survey responses will help strengthen our mission to increase funding and support for out-of-school-time programs that enable success for children and youth in Washington County.
The survey should take approximately 2 minutes to finish.
